The world is incredibly vast, yet every small thing it holds has its own unique charm. Even something so small as an ordinary water droplet has extraordinary properties. For instance, water droplets can be used to see ordinary things in an amazing new way. A water droplet under the sunshine can evaporate in only a matter of minutes, but if someone were to observe this fleeting phenomena carefully, they could see that all drops of water contain different, beautiful worlds inside. Through a property called refraction, light bends at different angles allowing the image seen through a drop of water to be wonderfully different. Blue skies, buildings, sea, people and a multitude of other objects can be viewed through this refractory lens to inspire interest and awe.

I used some “tools” to help me finish my work “The world in a drop of water”. For example, I utilized flower stems, paper clips, and the glasses on the vehicle to hold the water drop, which caught the objects inside it through the refraction of light. The objects one would look at this way could be anything such as the cars on the road, buildings, people, or books. The quiet world inside the water drop makes these objects appear more abstract and artistic. I preferred to catch objects with rich colors, because it makes the water droplet’s appearance come off as more attractive and full. The brightness of the light is a very important factor in my work as well. It cannot be too bright or too dark when the light refract through the water drop, this could negatively impact the overall feelings the objects convey.

The inspiration for me to take photos with water droplets draws from a childhood fascination with crystal balls. I was always astounded by crystal balls because each ball seemingly had different worlds inside, these differing atmospheres drew me in, and the unique aspects of each ball could make me feel comfortable and at peace. Crystal balls, just like drops of water, both contain unique new perspectives inside. However, the beautiful world created by a drop of water is ephemeral, so I want to record the wonderful moment they had through photography, to share and preserve the feelings they invoke.
